Question 1:
What is this place?

-Angkor Wat is a temple complex at Angkor, Cambodia, built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation—first Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.

Question 2:
Where is this place?

-Angkor Wat lies 5.5 km north of the modern town of Siem Reap, and a short distance south and slightly east of the previous capital, which was centered on the Baphuon. It is in an area of Cambodia where there is an important group of ancient structures. It is the southernmost of Angkor's main sites.

Question 3:
Why do tourists visit this place?

-The architecture of the Angkor Wat is the reason that attracts tourists. The Wat, an artificial mountain originally surrounded by a vast external wall and moat, rises in three enclosures toward a flat summit. The five remaining towers (shrines) at the summit are composed of the repetitive diminishing tiers typical of Asian architecture.

-The temple was constructed over a period of 30 years, and illustrates some of the most beautiful examples of Khmer and Hindu art.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Inside the Angkor Wat

What is this place?
The temples of Angkor, built by the Khmer civilization between 802 and 1220 AD, represent one of humankind's most astonishing and enduring architectural achievements. From Angkor the Khmer kings ruled over a vast domain that reached from Vietnam to China to the Bay of Bengal. The structures one sees at Angkor today, more than 100 stone temples in all, are the surviving remains of a grand religious, social and administrative metropolis whose other buildings - palaces, public buildings, and houses - were built of wood and are long since decayed and gone.

It is in an area of Cambodia where there is an important group of ancient structures. It is the southernmost of Angkor's main sites.

Why do tourists visit this place?
Since made famous by Hollywood's "Tomb Raider", tourism has skyrocketed. Over 1.6 million people visited Cambodia in 2006, five times as many as in 1998, making this the fastest-growing destination in Asia, most likely the world. Tourists also come to see the sunset over Angkor, a spectacular stretch of thousand-year old temples, encircled by moats, shaded by massive trees. At dusk every day around Bakheng hill, thousands of tourists pour from buses and scurry to the summit for heralded sunset views over the ancient stone temples.

(How has tourism impacted the Angkor Wat's surrounding activities?)
Many years ago, there was but a single hotel (the faded Grand) in Siem Reap, and a sleepy village near the temples. Now, there are over 100, some charging $1,000 a night, plus a pub street bubbling with activity, exquisite art galleries and a growing collection of spas, along with legions of massage parlors and brothels.

(How has tourism changed the Angkor Wat's structures?)
There are worries that all the foot traffic would wear down the old stone. Many of the stone monuments are already crumbling, and some years ago, one section collapsed. When an airstrip was opened in nearby Siem Reap, many fretted over the impact of landings upon the historic stone structures. The pounding has only picked up pace, as tourism grows at torrid 20-35 percent annual rates, bringing bigger planes and more flights from Japan, Thailand, Singapore and Korea.

I think this can be classified under heritage and cultural tourism because of the many centuries this site has stormed through and a lot of Khmer culture has been attached to this place. Tourists are able to get to know more about Cambodia's rich heritage and tradition through the historical Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat is based on cultural and heritage tourism as by visiting the temples of Angkor, tourists will be able to learn more about the different religons, like Hinduism and Buddhism in Cambodia throughout history. The most beautiful examples of Khmer and Hindu art, an important feature of Cambodian culture can also be found in the Angkor temples.
